Created in 2011 in Clermont-Ferrand, Artistes en résidence (A·R) is a non-profit organization that supports contemporary creation by organizing residencies for artists in the field of contemporary art. We support international mobility of artists and the circulation of ideas and skills through the development of a vast network of local, national and international partners.
At A·R, residencies are considered as a time entirely dedicated to research and experimentation with no obligation to produce. Our goal is to provide artists with the necessary time for qualitative and in-depth research, to promote a true immersion in the residency context, and to allow for trial and error as well as critical questioning necessary for the development of artistic practices.
Inaugurated in 2020, the 100-day residency program aims at welcoming artists of all ages and nationalities to Clermont-Ferrand for a period of 100 days. Selected artists are free to organize their residency as suited to their availability, whether it be over 100 consecutive days or dispersed over the course of one year. This flexibility takes into consideration the varied realities of artists and allows time for reflection, research and experimentation compatible with the artists’ professional and private obligations.
A stipend of 4,500 euros total.
Travel costs can be covered up to 700 euros per artist. A·R covers at least one round trip for each selected artist, even if this one round trip exceeds 700 euros. Visa fees are to be covered by the artists. An invitation letter can be provided by A·R for the visa application process.
The accommodation is a private bedroom in a fully equipped three bedroom apartment – with a bathroom and kitchen as well as a garden – shared with other residents. |images here|
Artists have access to a 160 square meter studio space, shared by up to 3 residents. This studio is located on Artistes en résidence premises in the multidisciplinary complexe La Diode, shared, amongst others, with Les Ateliers, an association that manages 17 studios for local artists on site. Selected artists have access to technical equipment on site shared between the two associations (equipped wood and metal workshop, portable power tools, two ceramic kilns, MIG welding station, audio-visual equipment, sewing machine, computer room with desktop and an A3 printer/scanner, 3D printer...). |images here|
Fostering meetings and exchanges, A·R’s team offers mentorship to artists and provides contacts of various art professionals, researchers, artisans or any other person who can contribute to the development of their practice.
The artists may, if they wish, organize or take part in a public event during which they can present their work or research. There is no obligation to present their work publicly if artists do not wish to do so. Artists can benefit from a flat fee of 150 euros for up to one public event during their residency.

Due to the very large number of applicants, a reduced selection of works allows an equitable assessment of all applications by members of the jury. Applications that don't respect these guidelines will be rejected.
Artists are not expected to outline a specific project for the residency, but to specify their need and/or interest in the 100-day residency program, or in an artistic residency in general. It is specified that the 100-day residency program is a research residency with no obligation to finalize production. In their note of intent, artists can highlight current research, their expectations about how the program will expand their existing body of work and/or enhance their professional development, their need for a studio or paid working time, their link to or interest in the territory, or any other reason that explains their desire to apply.
The applications can be written in French or English.
The open call will begin on April 15th, 2024.
The deadline to apply is May 15th, 2024 at 11.59pm (French time).
The selection committee is composed of the co-coordinators of A·R, former residents of the 100-day residency program and international art professionals.
Two artists will be selected.
Due to the very high number of applications (around 700 per application period), the results will be communicated beginning of July 2024 by email.
