Pieter van der Schaaf’s installations are environments that contain a multitude of historical and cultural data. Facing the mimicry of a space that is both standardized and familiar, a strange feeling of déjà vu arises. Through their formats, materials and locations, the sculptures seem to be waiting for new movements, as if through their restrained potentiality they were indicating a future event to the viewer. The missing elements create apparitions like phantom limbs and spur the recovery of the original source and its copies.
